Have you ever wanted to become a celebrity for the fame and wealth? If you can bypass the fame for the most part, you may be surprised that the healthcare field offers more jobs and at higher pay than any other profession in the U.S. So, put up that basketball (unless it will provide you with a scholarship) and crack open those med books if you want to earn a living that will place you in the top jobs listed below.

Since you were geared to become famous, we offer seventeen high-paying healthcare jobs you may have never heard about – or at least might not have thought about. We took our numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics as well as from wage income sites and medical sites that listed odd jobs and their descriptions. So, the numbers have been rounded and it is noted often that location, education and expertise often determine the higher end of these salary ranges.

The list is in alphabetical order to show our readers that we do not favor one job over another.

Anesthesiologist: did you ever think that the person who ‘puts you under’ for surgery makes more money than you? And, you don’t need to put out money for an expensive wardrobe to boot. Anesthesiologists are found in just about every operating room in the nation, and they make, on average, about $185,000 per year. If you want top pay, try ambulatory health care in Washington state or Wilmington, Delaware metro area.

Clinical Ethicist: If you know that there are no “wrong” and “right” answers to many questions, this job may be up your alley. The clinical ethicist follows guidelines set by government and health care facility standards. If this sounds too rigid for you, then realize that these standards constantly are changing to satisfy patient rights, privacy, quality of life, death and the allocation of health resources. A skilled clinical ethicist can make up to $150,000 per year.

Dentist: This category includes oral surgeons, orthodontists and prosthodontists. Orthodontists alone make almost $180,000 per year, while oral surgeons can pull in about $165,000 per year. Prosthodontists, who make oral prostheses to replace missing teeth and other oral structures, make over $155,000 per year.

Disastor Medical Specialist: Although you can earn from $150,000 to $300,000 in this career, you also need about twelve years of education beyond high school and some years of experience behind you. This job places you first on the scene during emergencies that involve mass injuries or illness, such as those that occur after a natural disaster or a man-made emergency such as a train derailment or a terrorist attack. You also can sideline by creating emergency plans for health care facilities.

Forensic Odontology: If you want to take a low-paying dentistry job into a higher sphere, try this career as a full- or part-time diversion. forensic odontologists use their expertise to help identify unknown remains and trace bite marks to a specific individual. Salaries in this career can range from $150,000 – $185,000 per year.

Forensic Pathologist: Although some medical examiners are pathologists, not all have the training to fit into this category. Forensic pathologists are trained physicians who examine bodies of people who died suddenly, unexpectedly or violently. You also get to perform autopsies, and if you serve the rich and famous, you, too, could become a celebrity like Thomas Noguchi. Salary for this career ranges between $100,000 to $500,000 per year, depending upon your education, skills and the location of the job.

Hospital CEO: If you want the spotlight to shine on you, then try this career on for size. You determine and formulate policies and provide overall direction of a company, healthcare facility or a department within a facility. You can make between $145,000 and $185,000 per year with this job.

Internist: A general internist can make about $160,000 per year, with Louisiana pulling in the top wages for this trade at over $180,000 per year.

Medical Librarian: Do you have books in your blood? If so, you can help others while being surrounded by books and a quiet environment. While the salary is on the low end for this list (from $40,000 to $160,000), your skills, location and range of education will place you on the higher end of that scale.

Obstetricians and Gynecologists: These doctors make more than anesthesiologists, and often in a much more relaxed environment. These jobs bring in about $175,000 per year, with the highest pay found in new Hampshire.

Optometrist: While this may seem like an ‘ordinary’ medical practice, you might be surprised to learn that optometrists have the widest range in salary – from $0 to over $175.000, depending upon where you work and your clientele. Doctors of optometry (OD) examine, diagnose, treat and manage eye diseases, injuries and disorders. U.S. News & World Report listed optometry as one of the Best Jobs for Investigative People, because it’s “a profession with a high cure rate, regular hours, good pay, and realistic potential for being successfully self-employed.”

Palliative Care Doctor: If you enjoy working with the elderly and making great money in the process, then this career may be for you. Although hospice care can include palliative care, not all palliative care includes end-of-life issues. But, people who need palliative care often do have serious health issues, possibly chronic conditions. So, having a strong heart and a caring manner are important for this job, where you can make between $150,000 and $170,000 per year.

Pediatricians: Children often need doctors more than adults, so you’ll be busy if you choose this field. But, the rewards and the salary might be worth the effort at an average annual salary over $145,000 per year. School doctors usually make out better than pediatricians in offices, and Louisiana will pay nicely for your skills.

Primary Care Sports Medicine: The sky is the limit in this field, where you can work with star athletes or with a group of elderly and physically active folks. You can work in surgical areas or in primary care, which encompasses all non-surgical care. In all cases, for between $100,000 and $200,000 per year, you work to prevent injury, improve performance and to enhance the overall health of your patients.

Podiatrist: You can make between $115,000 and $185,000 by diagnosing and treating diseases and deformities of the human foot. Oregon is looking for some good podiatrists, and you can make high-end dollar in the Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida metro area. You want to find outpatient care centers for your best dollar, too.

Psychiatrist: If you like to listen to other people’s problems, then there is no reason why you should not get paid for your skill. Psychiatrists see no problem with pulling in up to $150,000 to $300,000 per year, depending upon your education, training and location.

Surgeon: If you want to make the really big bucks, then specialize in this field. According to Forbes, a specialist surgeon can pull in over $185,000 per year. But, think about location as well and the number of years of study and training involved before you take this choice over something more glamorous.
